Eating too much sugar is not good for health
MAHATMA GANDHI AND ADVISE ON EATING SUGAR
Once there lived a young boy who loved to eat sugary food and consume sweet drinks. This habit of consuming lots of sweets caused the young boy to become obese or fat.
His mother tried in many ways to encourage her son to eat less sugary foods and snacks. When he did not listen, she even scolded him. However, her son did not listen to her.
This was the time in India when Mahatma Gandhi lived and all Indians respected and loved him very much. He was known as a great leader who led the country to Independence. The woman’s son too was a great fan of Mahatma Gandhi.
She thought, “My son is not listening to my advice. He is getting fatter and his health will get worse with each day. His idol is Mahatma Gandhi, I should take him to Gandhi and ask him to convince my son to eat less sugary food.”
With this thought in mind she told her son, “We should go and visit Gandhi, he is a great leader in India and it will be our good fortune if we can meet him.”
Her son was very happy at the thought of meeting his idol and readily agreed. They set out on the long journey to meet with Mahatma Gandhi.
Finally, they arrived and the woman and her son approached the great leader, Mahatma Gandhi.
She requested, “Please Bapu (Father), my son is very fond of sweets and he is now overweight. I am afraid that his health will get worse if he continues to eat too much sweets. Can you please tell my son to stop eating sugar?”
Gandhi thought for a while and replied, “Please return in one weeks’ time.”
The woman promptly returned one week later with her son and waited expecting Mahatma Gandhi to give some great words of wisdom and advice to her son.
Instead Gandhi sat down with the boy and spoke to him, “My son, stop eating sugar. It is not good for your health.”
One month went by and the mother returned, “Thank you very much. My son has listened to your advice, he has stopped eating sugary foods. But why didn’t you tell him to stop eating sugar when we first came? Why did you ask us to return after a week?”
Mahatma Gandhi smiled and replied, “Mother, when you first came, I was also eating more sugar than I needed. I was not qualified to advice your son to eat less sugary foods when I myself could not control my eating habit. I took one week to stop eating sugary foods. Then only I had the authority to say to your son, stop eating sugar.”
MORAL :
I must control my consumption of sugary food and drinks. It is not good for my health.
A person only has the authority to give advice if the person is living a life in accordance with the advice that he/she is giving to others.
