Outward Appearance of Detachment vs Inner Detachment

The PRIEST AND THE COURTESAN

In a small village, there lived an honourable and well-respected priest. The priest would sit on a platform and give sermons about God to noble persons in the village.

A courtesan named Aditi lived in the same village. On her way to work, Aditi would pass by and see the priest and hear him teaching about God. In her mind she would think, "How luckily he is to be so intelligent and be close to God. I am indeed unfortunate that I was born into such a home where the circumstances makes me lead a lowly life. I am not allowed the opportunity to listen to the praises and stories of the Lord. I cannot even read or write!"

Now the priest would see the courtesan Aditi passing by and think, "What a disgraceful life this woman is living. She spends her time entertaining men. She is a worthless woman. Shame on her for leading such a dishonourable life."

Even while engaged in her daily work, Aditi would have her thoughts on God throughout the day. She would think, "How wonderful it would be to live a noble life like the priest and be close to God. I wish I could serve God and know His glories!"

Meanwhile, the priest would spend the entire day thinking about Aditi. He would be thinking, "That woman must be singing and dancing and enticing men. She is using her body for earning money. What a despicable person she must be."

This went on for many years. It happened that the priest and Aditi the courtesan both died around the same time. The priest was well-respected and had a grand funeral service with many dignitaries speaking glowingly about him. All his funeral rites were done according to the scriptures.

Aditi did not have anyone to perform her funeral and she was cremated without any pomp or ceremony. There wasn't even one person who would say a prayer during her funeral service.

The priest reached heaven and noticed Aditi was passing through the gates of heaven but he was stopped from entering heaven. He told the angel there, "There must be a mistake, that lady has led a dishonourable life, she was a courtesan. I have preached the name of God all my life. I should be allowed into heaven, not her."

The angel at the gate looked at his records and spoke, "There is no mistake sir. You were educated and versed in the holy scriptures. Yet your mind was not concentrated on God. You spent your life thinking about the pleasures of men and their enjoyment with this woman. Her circumstances while alive were unfortunate, but Aditi was always thinking about God."

"The gates of heaven are open for persons whose mind is concentrated on God during their lifetime. Therefore, she has entered into heaven and you cannot enter."

The priest after hearing the judgement against him, now understood that his actions had only gotten him name and fame while alive. However, he had spent his life in useless thoughts and had cast judgement on Aditi. What a mean life he had lived!

Although circumstances in life placed her in negative conditions, the courtesan had given up attachment to her poor conditions in life and her body. Her mind was always immersed in thoughts of God. This made her eligible for entry into heaven. What a wonderful life she had lived, despite her birth in a lowly place!

MORAL :

Don't let negative circumstances in your life make you lead a miserable life. Use every moment in life to purify your mind. This will help free you from the shackles of earthly attachment and give you peace of mind.

If you are fortunate to be born in good circumstances, do not be proud of your position. Use your circumstances to improve yourself.

Do not cast judgement on less fortunate persons.

 LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE STORY

  i.        The priest was fortunate to be born into a good family and have good opportunities in life. He was well respected in the village.

ii.        The courtesan named Aditi was born into unfortunate circumstances and did not have the opportunity to be in a respected profession.

iii.      The priest was engaged in negative thoughts which was consuming him. He was unable to focus on good thoughts although he was born into a noble family and had a good profession.

iv.     Although Aditi was not respected in the village, she did not allow it to affect her peace of mind. She constantly thought of God and her desire to be with God helped her to detach from the negative circumstances that surrounded her.

v.   Attachment to position and fame will not help us if our mind is not pure.

vi.  All you can do is try and understand your own shortcoming and mistakes. Then correct your own flaws. Do not judge others!
