Ravana's Destruction due to Lustful Desires
Once there lived a powerful king by the name of Ravana. He had built a great kingdom and had many good and beautiful wives.
However it did not matter that he had many beautiful women in his palace, the more pleasures he enjoyed the more his desires were not satisfied.
One day his sister Surpanakha came to the palace and told him two men were wandering in the forest with a most beautiful woman named Sita. She spoke in great detail of the beauty of Sita. Further, she told him untruthfully that she tried to capture Sita and bring her to the palace for Ravana. However, the two men with Sita (her husband Raama and his brother Lakshmana) attacked her, cut her nose thus disfiguring her face and prevented her from bringing Sita to him.
Ravana remembered having seen Sita in her father's palace and trying to win her hand in marriage, but he had failed. He was infatuated with the beauty of Sita and wanted to possess her.
Ravana devised a plan to kidnap Sita and bring her to his kingdom. His brother Vibheeshan gave him sound advice, "It is not right for a man to wish for another man's wife. If you wish to punish Raama and his brother for hurting Surpanakha, then you should face them in open battle and not resort to kidnapping Sita."
Ravana blinded by his lust for Sita cursed his brother and threw him out of the kingdom.
Ravana devised a plan to lure the two brothers away from their hut in the forest. When Sita was alone he disguised himself as a Sage and went to the hut. Sita offered him food thinking he was a holy person. When she gave him the food he grabbed her and took her away to his kingdom.
Sita refused to become his wife. Ravana was afraid of taking her forcibly and making her his wife. Once he had abducted a chaste woman who uttered a curse, "Ravana, if you ever forcibly make a woman be with you, it will be your destruction!"
He left Sita in a garden in the palace and asked the guards to use any means to make her agree to marry him. If she did not agree he would kill her.
Ravana's wife Mandodari tried to reason with him. "Your palace is filled with so many beautiful wives all willing to serve you. Why keep a woman who already belongs to another and does not want to be with you. You should release Sita and return her to Raama. I have heard that Raama is compassionate and willing to forgive persons who will go to him and ask for pardon. It is better to make a friend of Raama than an enemy as he is very powerful."
Again Ravana was given very good advice by his wife Mandodari but Ravana's lust was too great, it caused him to lose his sense of reason.
Raama and Lakshmana on returning to their hut and finding Sita missing went in search of her. They made friends with the Vanara King Sugriva and his minister Hanuman. With the help of Sugriva and Hanuman they reached Ravana's kingdom and a huge battle ensued.
During the battle Ravana lost all his sons and he was finally killed by Raama.
Sita was reunited with Raama and they returned to their kingdom of Ayodhya.
Moral of the Story :
Lust for the opposite sex brings about infatuation (obsession or attachment from constantly thinking about the object).
Infatuation leads to loss of reason.
Loss of reason ultimately leads to the ruin (destruction) of the person.
If you must Desire, Desire to Conquer (win over) Your Desires!
LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE STORY
i. Ravana had many wives but enjoyment with them did not satisfy his lust for other women.
ii. Indulging in pleasures does not satisfy your desire. Satisfying your desire results in the desire growing and sprouting again and again.
iii. Surpanakha used Ravana's lust for women to seek revenge on Sita for having her nose cut. Weakness in the form of desires can be used against you and result in your ruin.
iv. Ravana had good counsel in the form of his righteous brother Vibheeshan and his chaste and good wife Mandodari.
v. Ravana lost all reason and did not take the good advice given by Vibheeshan and Mandodari.
vi. Ravana's sons were killed in battle and finally he was killed by Raama. Thus he brought his entire kingdom into ruin because of his lust for women.
