STEALING IN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM
Once there lived a young girl named Vishana. Vishana was very beautiful and had just completed her university degree. She wanted to join the teaching service and help educate young people, so they could have a brighter future.
Vishana was assigned a job at a downtrodden school in the country. However, she was a dedicated person and went to school with the good intention of helping her students. The first day she arrived at school the students started making comments about her as she was of a different race to many of the students attending the school. She ignored the remarks and went to the classroom with a lot of bright ideas about teaching her subject. Unfortunately, most of the students were not interested in learning and were disruptive in class. There were one or two students who showed a little interest in learning but due to the other students she couldn’t cover the topic she had planned to teach.
Some of the teachers told her, “Don’t waste your time, these kids don’t want to learn. Just relax and let them waste their life.”
Vishana was annoyed at this remark, “I am being paid to teach, it is my duty to try and even if one child learns in the class it will be enough. It will amount to cheating the education system and the government who is paying my salary if I do not do my duty with diligence.”
The other teachers laughed at her, “We thought like that when we first joined but you will soon get frustrated and leave those delinquents to their own ruin.”
Vishana thought to herself, “I must find some method to try and encourage the class to participate in learning.”
Vishana bought a bag of chocolates and went to class the next day. She started class and after speaking a while asked a question. One student had been paying attention and gave an answer. She tossed a chocolate to the student. This caught most of the other students’ attention. The class began paying attention and started learning. Vishana was happy with the result but knew that she could not keep their attention like this for the entire class. She would spend a few minutes at the end of the class and have discussions with the students about music, relationships and other things that interested young people.
“Class I know that many of you are behind in the subject and you have to prepare for exams. I will stay back and give lessons to those who need help.” Vishana offered extra classes to the students without charging any money. She knew the parents would not be able to afford to pay for extra classes for their kids.
The principal called Vishana to her office, “Vishana, there is a special career guidance seminar and presentation for student at the Hilton Hotel. Would you take some of the students to the career guidance day?”
Vishana replied, “Of course, I will be happy to take them.”
When the other teachers heard that the principal had asked Vishana to take students to the career day they advised her, “The students of the school has poor behaviour in the school compound. They will run wild when they are taken outside of the school. You better change your decision.”
Vishana did not heed the negative remarks about the student. She already had a list of things to do in preparation for the career day. She had to prepare consent forms and give them to the students for their parents to sign allowing them to go to the event. As the school teacher in charge, she had to ensure that transport was organized to safely transport the students to and from the event.”
Vishana was very happy that the students were enthusiastic about the Career Day event. She knew some of them would be thinking, “If I attend the event I will not have to attend school that day.” But she was sure they would learn something at the event. Vishana was pleasantly surprised that the students arrived on time and behaved in a very commendable manner during the entire day.
Vishana encouraged the students to form a Spanish Club and she helped them organize club events.
Gradually Vishana won the hearts of the students. One day of the young men asked, “Miss can I ask you something?”
“Go ahead, what is it?”
“Miss do you have a boyfriend? I think you are very sexy, how do I get a girlfriend like you?”
Vishana kept a serious face and answered, “Sexy girls like me, like guys who are smart, have a good job, who will not cheat on us and can handle commitment. You better do well in school and get a good job to attract a girl like me. And next time, ask me the question in Spanish.”
All the boys and girls around laughed at her spicy answer. Thus, she endeared herself to the students. They found they could easily approach her with concerns about challenges in school and their private life and she would help them.
Though she did not look for rewards but thought it her duty to teach. However, the students appreciated her dedication and kindness towards them and voted her Teacher of the Year for the few years she taught at the school.
Vishana had an honest and open approach to life which endeared her to her colleagues and students. Unlike some teachers who took their monthly salary and gave up on teaching the students, Vishana was able to honestly earn her wages and benefit the students at the school.
MORAL:
Teachers can hoard their knowledge if discouraged by the negative attitude of students to learning. The teacher who behaves in this manner robs the students of a good education and cheats the employer by taking a salary that they did not work for honestly.
Students rob themselves of a good education if they do not study well.
Students rob other students of an education if they are disruptive in class.
It is the duty of teacher to find methods to encourage student to learn, even when faced with the negative attitude of students.
It is the duty of students to have a positive attitude towards learning and understanding.
LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE STORY
i. Some of the teachers could be termed as hoarders as they did not impart their knowledge to the students due to the negative attitude of the students to learning.
ii. The negative attitude of the students to learning resulted in the students cheating themselves of a good education which would help them in the future.
iii. Vishana noticed the negative attitude of the students but did not give up.
iv. Vishana viewed honesty in work as a priority. She did not wish to take her salary without at least trying to work for the money. She thought of ways to capture the interest of the students so they would start learning.
iv. Vishana related to the students on their level, discussing things that interested them. She was able to help make a positive difference in their lives by winning their respect and trust.
v. Some teachers did not earn their salary but collected the money at the end of the month. People who do not put in the effort at work and collect a salary are robbers.
vi. Students need to understand that they cheat themselves if they do not study. If a teacher is trying to impart knowledge, the student must make efforts to learn and understand the subject.
