Sound is very important and creates vibrations that affect our moods, motivates us and can create either positive or negative changes in individuals and groups. These seeds sounds are known as Mantra (man is from the root meaning sound; tra means that which protects or defends).

Just as a seed planted in the earth grows and from a single seed you can get a forest; in the same manner seed sounds have a lot of potential energy for positive development of the individual, the society and the world.

There SEED SOUNDS that were known to ancient Indian sages. They understood and used these seed sounds for Positive Development of the society.

Here are some seed sounds which when chanted creates vibrations that enhances the intelligence (AIM), gives good energy (HREEM), wealth and health (SHREEM), spiritual knowledge (SHIVA), happiness (RAAMA), helps to wash away sins, problems and confusion (ANAGHA) and gives the gift of victory (DATTAYA) to the person chanting.

The following mantra was given by His Holiness Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji for World Peace and Protection. The sounds can be chanted for 5 to 10 minutes to promote peace and protection of the person chanting and for the greater benefit of the world.

OM AIM HREEM SHREEM

SHIVA RAAMA ANAGHA DATTAYA NAMAHA

PATIENCE : Episode in the life of Ramana (adapted for children)

Ramana was fourteen (14) years old. He decided to go to the Aruna mountains to meditate on Lord Shiva. He went to his mother to get her blessings to leave home.

Ramana requested, “Mom I want to go to and stay on the Aruna mountains and pray to Lord Shiva.”

His mother replied, “No Ramana you are too young. Who will cook for you and look after you?”

Ramana answered, “Lord Shiva takes care of everyone. Will he not take care of me?”

Ramana’s mother did not want him to go but she knew he wanted to follow a righteous path. She packed some food and gave Ramana permission, “Okay you may go but take some food with you.”

Ramana bowed at his mother’s feet, took her blessings and went to the Aruna mountains. It was late when he arrived, so he ate the food his mother had packed and went to bed on the earth, under the night sky.

Ramana woke up very early the next morning. He went to the river and had a bath then he returned to the mountain and sat in meditation to Lord Shiva.

Ramana continuously chanted mantras, “OM Namah Shivaya. OM Namah Shivaya.”

There were some mischievous boys in the village and they decided to trouble Ramana as he was meditating.

One of the young boys said, “Look at that fellow, he is so strange sitting like a piece of wood, let us see if he can stay like that for long.”

The boys started throwing pebbles at Ramana but he remained unmoved and steadfast in his chanting and prayers to Lord Shiva. This continued for many days.

A Maha Rishi was roaming the Aruna mountains and saw the boys troubling Ramana. He was known for his fierce nature and scolded the boys and chased them away.

The Maha Rishi shouted, “You rascals stop bothering Ramana. Get away from here or I will trash you.”

The boys ran away scared. The Maha Rishi went to the house of those boys and scolded the parents.

The Maha Rishi roared, “You parents are not training your children properly. Teach them to behave politely and not hurt or disturb others. If I see them troubling Ramana again they will not escape. I will punish them myself.”

The parents were afraid of the Maha Rishi and called their children.

The parents scolded their children, “Children come here. You are very naughty and that Maha Rishi will beat you if you go and trouble Ramana. From today, you will stay inside the house and not roam on the mountains. You will behave yourselves and do some work at home and read some good books. If you don’t do this you will not get any food.”

So the children had to stay indoors and Ramana was able to continue his meditation without any disturbance. He meditated for many years. Then Lord Shiva appeared before him and blessed him.

God appeared in the form of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva said, “Ramana, I am pleased with your prayers and penance. I bless you with good knowledge to help others.”

Ramana bowed before Lord Shiva. Ramana grew up to be a Great Rishi. With the grace of God’s blessings, Ramana Maha Rishi built an ashrama, attended to and helped many people, was kind to animals and cultivated a beautiful garden because of his love for plants.

Saints like Ramana have that patience to keep their minds on their goal.

Some of the lessons learned from the life of Ramana are:

1.  We must be respectful to our parents and elders.

2.  We must ask for our parents’ permission and blessing before taking any actions.

3.  We must keep our mind on our goal and not be disturbed by the good or bad actions of others.

4.  We can achieve success in life if we are patient and keep practicing.

5.  When God blesses us, we are able to help others.

Did Ramana get angry at the boys for troubling him?

What would have happened if Ramana had gotten angry with the boys?

             i.        Ramana would be upset and his mind would be disturbed.

ii.        Ramana would be unhappy.

iii.        Ramana would then lose his concentration on his goal of thinking constantly of God.

iv.        Ramana would not have achieved peace and happiness.

Ramana was not angry with the boys nor did he feel any dislike for them. He continued his work and did not bother with them.

What happened to the boys who behaved badly?

Is it better for you to remain calm and peaceful or be angry and upset?

Who benefits if you are angry?

Who benefits if you are patient and forgiving?

From the story what do you think patience means?

Patience means to have (i) self-control; (ii) to remain calm and peaceful and (iii) to be tolerant of differences.

When you have patience,

(i) you understand that other persons may think, speak and act differently to you.

For example, some persons will think quickly and be witty, others may take time to think and then act. Some persons may be loud and others may be soft spoken. Some persons will wish everyone to succeed while others may be jealous of the success of others. Some persons may act with good intentions and others may not.

(ii) you do not wish to harm even those who harm you and

(iii) you do not allow others to disturb your peace.

It is easy to love those who love us and treat us good.

To love those who have hurt you is difficult and the true test of your patience and forgiveness.
