Satyam Contemplates the Beggars in Society
Episode from the life of Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji (Satynaryana)
Satyanarayana (Satyam) worked at the post office as a young man. It was pay day and he had just received his salary. Satyam was going home to the house of Parvatamma.
On the way home at a particular place Satyam heard the wailing not of one but of two persons. "Father, please save us!" They were a beggar couple, man and wife who he often saw on the way to and from work. It was not new that they were begging, but their crying was new and their begging together was new.
"Why do you cry?" Satyam asked.
"We admitted out child in the general hospital. They said that no medicine was available there. It has been four days since we ate any food. There is no milk for the child. We can't afford to buy milk and feed the child. The child is dying. If he dies, we too will die. Father! You must save us, you have to save us!"
They were beggarly faces. They had no sense of shame and impudence at all. They had no sense of honour or dignity and self-esteem. They say for such people there are no morals and no code of conduct. But there are bellies to fill! They have the hearts of loving care for the children born of them! But who will care for their hungry stomachs and heart aches?
They might utter lies to others but not to Satyam. If a pie remains after filling their stomachs, they may waste it, but they are no stupids to kill their infants and dance.
Satyam's heart melted on hearing their crying. The bundle of money he had just received from his pay developed wings and flew from his pocket. The beggarly couple thankfully took it and ran off to look after their sick child.
Now Satyam thought, "A gift has been made, what was its purpose? By giving a small amount it is like giving first-aid to a bigger problem. There are so many beggars in the society in this world!"
Satyam examined the different types of beggars in the world thus;
Someone stretching his hand and asking for alms is considered a worthless fellow. If another person extends his hand and begs in the name of serving the public but has in his mind the thought of getting a big position, he is considered as dignified.
If someone does some acrobats and juggling on the streets he is considered a "street acrobat beggar" but if someone jumps about in the Olympics then he gets a medal.
If someone twangs a single stringed instrument and sings about goodness and righteousness he is a beggar. If a person goes on a stage (dais) and speaks the same truths he is considered a man of wisdom and honoured."
There are two types of beggars, the street beggar and the dignified beggar.
Satyam thoughts continued, "If all the beggars were to be removed today the society itself will create another army of beggars the next day. Who is doing this job of creating this army of beggars? The respectable and dignified beggars are doing this job of creating the street beggars. These suffering beggars like the couple, are the children of these dignified beggars only. That is why both types of beggars have the same quality of selfishness."
The bicycle wheels turned quickly and sped towards home as Satyam analyzed the situation of the beggars in society. "The cause of the beggars are rooted in selfishness of people. What is the cause of this selfishness? The loss of the inner vision in men is the cause. The loss of compassion and kindness and basic goodness of a person is causing suffering in the world."
Satyam understood that by himself been selfless and giving a gift without expecting anything in return, he could set an example of selflessness for others to follow. He made a vow to help people to awaken gently to their basic goodness, as this is the only remedy to the problem of removing suffering in the society and world.
