Once Dattatreya was sitting in meditation when King Yadu passed by and saw this young person sitting unaffected, happy and calm.

King Yadu approached Dattatreya and humbly asked, “ How do you remain unaffected by troubles, happy and calm? Why do you always seem to be floating in bliss (happiness)? What has made this possible?”

Dattatreya replied, “O King Yadu I have observed the world closely and obtained a little knowledge from a number of gurus (teachers). Listen carefully! I will tell you what I have learnt.”

Datta’s  Guru - the Sky.

Datta said, “Look at the sky space, it is all pervading (exists everywhere)." The space exists in pots as pot space, in a room as room space, in my body as body space. "There is only one space but depending on which object it is confined to it is called by different names.  However, the Space is immeasurable and cannot cut or be divided (it is indivisible).

Seeing this and recognizing that the inner Self, dwells in innumerable bodies, is unattached and indivisible, I learnt to experience the Self everywhere and in everything

There is an extraordinary thing about the Sky, clouds are formed by the elements of dust, water and fire, with the help of the air they move about in the sky. Yet the sky is not stained by them. From this I learnt, that the Self is not contaminated by the qualities of the elements forming the body. This is what the Sky has taught me."

A true sage is pure like the sky, unaffected by anything in the phenomenal world.

His inner Self, like the sky, is unperturbed by things and events.
