THE SAGE AND HIS MEDITATION

Once there lived a sage in a small village. One early morning after his morning rituals at the river, the sage returned to his hut.

The sage shut the door of the hut and sat on a mat for meditation. It was a beautiful and peaceful morning with the gentle breeze and the chirping of the birds in the trees. In that peaceful state and with the quiet of the place, the sage was able to concentrate his mind easily on thoughts of God.

Later that morning the village awoke and slowly the bustle outside of the sage's hut increased. People passing by in the street were chatting, the dogs were barking, horse drawn carts and the hammering of the cobbler could all be heard.

The sage tried his best to continue with his meditation but to no avail. He was disturbed again and again by the noise outside the hut.

Finally, frustrated with the situation, the sage stood up and went to the door of the house. He opened the door and saw the cobbler at work across the street. The sage crossed the street and went to the cobbler. He asked the cobbler, "Friend how can you work when there is so much noise in the streets?

The cobbler looked up puzzled and answered, "What noise sir?"

The sage realized that amidst the many different loud sounds around him, the cobbler was able to fully concentrate on his work without any disturbance.

The sage returned to his hut and listening to the sounds outside, he gradually brought his attention to the sounds around him in the hut. Then he listened to his breath and noticed that he felt quieter and more peaceful.

Thus the sage realized that although he could not stop the noise around him, yet he could find quiet and peacefulness within and around him. This enabled him to then concentrate his mind on his meditation practices.

Moral of the Story :

Focus and Concentration should not depend on the external environment.

Learn to concentrate your mind on positive thoughts of God amidst the noise and confusion of life.

LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE STORY

  i.       We cannot run away from the world, even if we go to live in the mountains our thoughts can create a lot of noise.

ii.        We must learn amidst our daily lives to bring our minds to concentrate on the sounds around us and become in harmony with our environment.

iii.        By concentrating on the sound of the breath a sense of quiet and peace can be achieved even if there is noise around you.

iv.    The cobbler was not disturbed by the noise, he had one pointed concentration on his work. When we focus our mind on a goal we should not let our mind get distracted by external or internal noise.
