Benefits of the Company of Saints and One Pointed Concentration

GIVING OF ALMS

During his younger days Swamiji, known as Satyanarayana or Satyam worked at the post office. It was payday, Satyam was returning home, to the house of his aunt Parvatamma.

On the way home at a particular place Satyam heard the loud cries of two persons. “Babu, please save us.” They were a beggar couple man and wife whom he often saw on the way. It was not new that they were begging but their crying and their begging together was new.

“Why are you crying?” asked Satyam.

“We admitted our child in the general hospital. They said there was no medicine available there. It has been four days since we ate any food. There is no milk for the child. We can’t afford to buy milk and food for the child.  Our child is dying. If he dies we too will die. Father! You must save us, you have to save us!”

They were beggarly faces. They had no sense of shame or honour or dignity or self-esteem. However, they had hearts of loving care for the children born to them. But who will care for their hungry stomachs or grieving hearts?

They might utter lies to any other but not to Satyam. Satyam’s heart melted. He took the pay he had received that day and gave it to the couple.

Satyam speed home on his bicycle. His thoughts whirling away like the wheels of the bicycle. He had given a gift but that would not solve the problem of the many beggars in the world.

In the world there are beggars on the street, those that sing and do acts of jugglery for a few pennies. They are considered mean and base. However if the same persons were to beg for votes or sing on a stage they are considered as dignified. The dignified beggars are selfish, and the source of this selfishness has created an army of poverty. Satyam’s thoughts were like this and turning as quickly as the wheels of bike.

“What is causing this selfishness? How to root it out? The root cause is the loss of the inner vision of men (of their true divine nature). The result is inner selfishness which shows as outer selfishness. This is the linkage.”

“Setting an example of leading a selfless life (dedicated to the service of others) on the one hand and causing an inner vision to this society is the only remedy to the problem.”

With these thoughts Satyam took a vow, which was the command of His Mother and Guru, to work tirelessly for the welfare of the world by Himself setting an example of selfless service.

Satyam with one pointed concentration and determination began the mission of providing hospitals, feeding programs, schools and other services for the welfare of the society.

From childhood and throughout His life, He is working selflessly for society and the world at large. His meals are sparse and his sleep even less as thousands of persons visit and request assistance on a daily basis.

He undertakes world tours to reach the devotees and spread His message. In addition, for the benefit of the world he uses the internet (facebook, utube, vimeo) to provide noble and virtuous lessons for persons, to encourage everyone to chant the holy names and raise the consciousness of the world and improve the environment in which we live.
