Greatness of SADGURU (Spiritual Master)

EPISODE FROM SRI GANAPATHY SACHCHIDANANDA SWAMIJI'S LIFE

A strange incident happened one year during Navaratri festival (worship of God in the form of the Divine Mother), Swamiji entered into the fire and came out unscathed. While he was giving teertham (holy water) an elderly devotee, Narayana Rao came there with assistance from his son.

He told Swamiji, "I am not fortunate, I could not see Swamiji's Poornahuti (final offering into the fire). I am becoming very old and so I do not know whether I will be alive next year or not! I wanted to see the final offering into the fire at least this year, but alas! I could not." He was full of agony for missing the occasion.

Narayan Rao was an old man who had spared no effort to serve the Ashram of Swamiji. Swamiji was moved by his sorrow and grabbed the jasmine garland he had brought for Swamiji. The fire was still blazing and Swamiji threw that garland in the fire. The fire blazed up even more. Meanwhile Swamiji jumped into the fire like a lightning and came out like a lightning. He brought Narayan Rao's flower garland that had been thrown into the fire. The jasmine garland was fresh and radiant it too had not been burnt by the flames of the fire. Swamiji gave the garland to Narayana Rao and told him it was a blessing from the Fire God, Agni.

Earlier people were saying Swamiji was using medicinal herbs which allowed him to go into the fire and not be burnt. Now they were confused, even the jasmine garland brought by Mr Rao when thrown into the fire by Swamiji was not burnt.

During a press conference, reporters poured question upon Swamiji. All those queries were about the miracles done by the Swami and his wonderful acts. Swamiji answered the questions with patience and at last gave a small lecture.

"Dear friends! All your queries are centered upon the art of jugglery, but I advise you not to be deceived by these acts of jugglery. They are the meanest way to attract people.

If you wish to see those who live after a snake bite go and search out the snake men. If you want to see persons who do not bleed when they pierce their bodies with a knife, you see a juggler. If you want people who create idols and vibhooti you follow the magicians and illusionist.

If anybody tells you that I tame snakes, swallow their poison and that I  stand in fire, you tell them that they are all vulgar arts. I am telling you personally that you should not be deceived by seeing such acts. Don't believe them, who ever may do them. Don't believe even if I do those acts! Publish this as my message in your paper.

The spiritual art is very Noble. It depends upon realism (understanding what is real and unreal) not on jugglery (magic tricks). My life's mission is to give spiritual knowledge to the person who is distressed not knowing the true path.

When you find time participate in the noble gatherings in our ashram. You participate in Homam (fire worship), prayer and devotional singing. Then only you will understand whether jugglery (magic) or the real spiritual philosophy will benefit you.

I have faith in noble tradition. I am doing prayer, devotional singing, propagation of righteousness, preaching of yoga, encouraging Sanskrit language, egalitarian outlook towards all, helping the oppressed and the depressed as far as I can and these are my duties in my life.

I am teaching these things only if there are people who want to listen to my words. Not understanding this, some people are confused, and thinking that I am doing some miracles, if they confuse others also, what can I do?"

 Moral of the Story :

There are two paths that people confuse;

(i) spiritual accomplishment that is used for the welfare of the people and world at large and

(ii) magic and illusion used to attract people but are of no benefit to the people other than for entertainment.

The spiritual art is very Noble and should be followed and not be confused with illusions by magicians.

The spiritual art can be known if it creates positive change in you. When you are in the presence of the Sadguru and follow the practices given by Sadguru these positive changes are easily seen by you.

LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE STORY

  i.        Earlier devotees were doubting that Swamiji was doing some magic tricks or using special herbs to enter the fire and help others. Swamiji was not disturbed by what the people were saying about Him

ii.   Swamiji did not try to explain to people who were creating doubts within themselves. It was the work of Swamiji to help the distressed and the oppressed who came to him. People must find out the cause of their doubts and try to remove them and improve themselves.

iii.     Narayana Rao had served Swamiji with complete faith and devotion. He understood Swamiji spiritual powers and wanted to witness the offering into the fire for his own benefit. Swamiji out of love and kindness fulfilled Narayana Rao's wish.

iv.    Even the garland was not burnt when thrown into the flames of the fire by Swamiji. Then people began to understand that the Sadguru was was not performing magic or jugglery.

v.   Swamiji cautioned that magic and illusions attract people but do not help them in any way.

vi.   Swamiji advised that people should follow the noble spiritual path. People should sing devotional songs, engage in pooja or prayer, worship, helping others and this path will ultimately help people progress in life.
