Unknown Depths of the SADGURU (Spiritual Master)

EPISODE FROM SRI GANAPATHY SACHCHIDANANDA SWAMIJI'S LIFE

Once Swamiji met a master magician, Vajhakunnan on his tours in India. He invited Vajhkunnan to perform magic tricks during the Shiva Ratri festivals in Mysore. Vajhakunnan had special powers such as creating some objects, seeing the deeds done by persons known to him even if they were far away.

Vajhkunnan's granddaughter was expecting a baby and her condition was very critical. She was admitted to the hospital. Everyone had lost hope. Vajhkunnan cancelled his trip to Mysore. Unable to do anything he started praying to Swamiji. He observed what Swamiji was doing in Mysore and could feel his vibrations. He saw Swamiji had gone into meditation and was helping his granddaughter through His powers. In the morning the doctors said they were thoroughly surprised that Vajhakunnan's granddaughter had easy delivery of the baby and both mother and baby were resting well.

Vajhkunnan immediately left for Mysore. When he saw Swamiji he created vibhooti (holy ashes) and covered Swamiji's feet and bowed down to those Holy Feet in gratitude. He created sweets and distributed to all the children in the ashram. Vajhkunnan gave a brilliant magic performance that day.

Rajaram one of Swamiji's devotees came and asked, "What specialty did you notice in Swamiji? What is the difference between you a magician and Swamiji?"

Vajhkunnan looked at him and replied, "I have the art of conjuring (doing some magic tricks) as well as some ascetic (spiritual) powers. I usually mix them in my performance. Creating vibhooti and sweets from the air is ascetic powers. It is not conjuring. I will show you another ascetic power."

He took a pack of cards and spread them on the table. "This table is from the ashram only. You think of any card from this pack of cards."

Rajaram thought of a card, Vajhkunnan began looking at the cards seriously. After one or two minutes a card started moving. It moved in the direction of the movement of Vajhkunnan's eyes. Finally it fell to the ground. It was the same card that Rajaram had thought of.

"You see this is ascetic accomplishment. I have developed that power in my eyes. I can also see what is in the mind of a person far away. I have examined what Swamiji was doing, what his essence is and what is his basic principle. After observing I am his dedicated devotee. You will have to guess what I have seen."

Rajaram spoke to the people gathered there, "You have witnessed the art of conjuring. It has no other value than entertainment. All miracles are like this only, whoever may do them. There is no value in them. Devotion, wisdom and detachment only take human being to the knowledge of God."

Vajhkunnan while taking leave of Swamiji, touched His feet and said with devotion, "Swamiji, I am submitting this aged life, these arts, these ascetic powers and everything at your lotus feet. Please liberate me. Please grant me eternal peace. Hereafter, I will not give performances, only if you give me permission, otherwise I won't."

Swamiji pulled a garland from his neck. Lo! a Rudraksha garland came out. When Vajhkunnan saw the garland, tears rolled from his eyes. Rajaram could not understand why Vajhkunnan was shedding so much tears, after all the Rudraksha beads were very small.

Vajhkunnan was not in a state to talk so Swamiji explained to Rajaram.

"Look Rajaram, this is not an ordinary Rudraksha garland. The beads in this garland are straight away brought from a Rudraksha tree. Out of one or two thousand bead fruits, there will be one such small Rudraksha fruit on the tree. This garland will be formed by 108 such fruits. Think waht an arduous job it is! This is why Vajhkunnan is so blissful. Even if you spend your entire property you cannot get such a garland prepared. This is more powerful than the ordinary Rudraksha garland. Lord Sadashiva wears on such garland, there is one on Swamiji's neck. Now Professor Vajhakunnan is fortunate to have such a garland." Swamiji said..

Vajhakunnan received the garland from Swamiji with great devotion and went away.

When reporters asked Swamiji if he created idols and performed miracles, Swamiji would reply, "Look here there is vibhooti (holy ash) packets here and idols. My friends would consider even my giving them a pebble as a holy offering. In their view my giving itself is creation."

Thus no one could fathom the depths of Swamiji or His powers.

Moral of the Story :

Spiritual accomplishment and magic appear to be similar and a person can develop some spiritual powers and use this for earning wealth or fame.

Holy men utilize spiritual accomplishment for the welfare of the people and not for entertainment.

A Spiritual Master can be known as He in whose presence you feel peace and a positive change inside you.

LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE STORY

 i.       Swamiji respected the elderly magician and invited him to perform at the ashram. Swamiji saw Vajhkunnan's internal development and wanted to give some benefit to him.

ii.   Vajhkunnan even on meeting Swamiji saw through his internal eyes, Swamiji's specailty. Thus he understood that Swamiji could help his granddaughter even if the doctors could not save her.

iii. Vajhkunnan was an accomplished magician and explained a little about ascetic (spiritual) accomplishment by demonstrating how he used these powers in his magic tricks. Ascetic accomplishment include making sweets from the air, reading what is in someone's mind.

iv.  The elderly Vajhkunnan examined Swamiji thoroughly and understood the depths of Swamiji's nature and surrendered his life and skills at the feet of Swamiji.

v. Vajhkunnan requested Swamiji to bless him with Liberation and Eternal Peace. He was a sincere seeker and Swamiji gave him blessings in the form of a special mala (rosary) that He materialized for Vajhkunnan's benefit.

vi.   The spiritual greatness of holy persons cannot be understood by ordinary persons. These saints use their spiritual accomplishment only for the welfare of the world.
