THE SWAMI TEACHES HOW GIFTS SHOULD BE OFFERED
Once Raja Rao and Dr Krishna Murthy (both devotees of Swamiji) were at the ashrama at the same time.
They were both busy with their own works and could not find time to talk with each other. One day the doctor patted his friend Raja Rao saying, "Raja Rao give $250 to Swamiji."
Raja Rao replied, "Why money to Swamiji, and why should I give on your suggestion?"
Raja Rao's aunt who was there scolded Raja Rao, "The doctor is our guide and treated you several times. You must find it joyful to honour (fulfill) his words without any arguments."
At his aunt's word, Raja Rao handed over the money to the doctor, saying, “Yes this is your fees.”
The doctor took the money and presented it to Swamiji saying, "Raja Rao offered this amount to Swamiji."
Swamiji summoned Raja Rao and said, "It appears you have sent money for me?”
"I have not given a cent to you," contradicted Raja Rao. The doctor asserted, "He indeed gave the money, but he is resolute to deny it with his rough edges (manners)."
"My aunt desires me to give fees to the doctor and so I have given to him. I have not sent it to you." confirmed Raja Rao.
"Why should he offer me fees at all?" questioned the doctor.
"By the way, to whom should the fruit (recognition) of this contribution (money) belong?" enquired Swamiji.
"I have not made any contribution and hence I need not receive the fruit. Also it is not my job to know to whom it belongs.” said Raja Rao.
"The money came from Raja Rao, he is the real donor." repeated the doctor.
“Then okay both of you may go,” Swamiji said and they left. Joyfully tears rolled down from the eyes of Swamiji. Sharing the joy he addressed Chandru.
"This is solemn money. Generally when people put even a cent here they are always thinking, "I gave the money, I only gave the money. The money is tainted by their selfish thoughts. There is no one in the world who can claim this money, hence this is really solemn money (pure money)."
Such offerings are dear to Swamiji, that are made unconditionally with untainted purity of submission. Swamiji does not even mind if the donor feels that he is donating.
It is a known fact that the offerings of people are encircled by their selfish end. Sometimes the earnings are also of illegal nature. This makes the offerings impure. In such cases, Swamiji has several ways of refusing them.
There were days when Swamiji had to go without a meal, when the rice shared on the Sundays was finished. Even on such days Swamiji made the young deer he reared fondly, eat the $100 rupee notes received by him. Everyone would be in an uproar. Swamiji used to say, "You cannot tolerate to digest even one paise (cent) out of the money. You cannot tolerate or digest the food bought with the money. Hence I am giving to the animal."
Another day, Raja Rao was in meditation and he felt like giving Swamiji something. He pooled up all the money he had and placed it at the feet of the Swami.
"What is the matter Raja Rao? It seems you have brought some money here. What is your longing? How do you wish the money to be spent?" enquired Swamiji.
"I don't know. I have no desire as to how it should be spent. I don't even know why I have given. You may use it if you feel it is useful or you may even throw it in the streets." said Raja Rao.
"Let me know if you have any desire of constructing anything in the ashrama with the money. Tell me. Don't hesitate." asked Swamiji.
"Not at all. If you are so persistent, I must say, I didn't give the money. Someone made me give the money. In fact I have no authority over it at all." said Raja Rao in a more assertive way.
"So your problem is over Kantam Tata (grandfather), take the amount," said Swamiji to Kantam Tata who was present. "Raja Rao, in fact there is no money available in the ashram for purchasing food material. We are prepared to fast for the day but a group of 25 devotees have come from a long distance. Kantam Tata is worried about arranging their meals. Now a solution is found in this way," said Swamiji turning to Raja Rao.
"Then it is alright. The One that prompted me knows what is to be done with the money. Then why should I be asked for an opinion?" said Raja Rao with a smile.
"Only to know how your intellect responds." said Swamiji.
Another incident quite contrary (opposite) to the above incident happened with the doctor. With the increase in the number of persons to the ashram the need for more washroom facilities was felt. Keeping this in mind, one day the doctor put some money at the feet of Swamiji and requested him to order construction of some latrines with the money. Swamiji agreed but utilised the amount for some other purpose. The doctor came to know of this matter when he next visited the ashram.
He felt a bit annoyed. In those days the doctor, Kantam Tata and Raja Rao were the elderly people. They were twice the age of the Swami. The annoyed doctor, revealing the importance of the construction gave some money once again and said to Swamiji, "At least this time, please order the work." Once more Swamiji utilized the money for some other purpose. It happened like this four times. The doctor could not adjust with the attitude and offering some money once again said to Swamiji, "Lots of thanks to you, it is better to keep quiet instead of telling you anything. Take this amount and do whatever you would like to do with it." He left the money at the feet of Swamiji.
Yes! this should be the right way of any request. Now because the offering was a solemn one, Swamiji ordered the construction as desired by the doctor.
LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE STORY
i. Raja Rao and the doctor were both very good persons and did service at the Ashram.
ii. First money was offered but no one claimed ownership of the money. Such a contribution is not stained by selfish motives and can be utilized without anyone experiencing negative effects of the money.
iii. If you offer something with the feeling it belongs to you or if you got it by wrong means then it does not benefit anyone. The offering is masked by impure feelings or by incorrect means of earning. If you accept such gifts, you or anyone who uses such gifts will have to endure sufferings. Hence Swamiji fed the deer such offerings.
iv. The thought to give something arose of itself and Raja Rao offered without expecting anything in return.
v. Do you have control of your thoughts? If you offer something that you have, does it belong to you after offering or gifting it? Who should decide how it is to be used after you offer it?
vi. What lesson did Swamiji teach the doctor about offering a gift?
