Once Dattatreya was sitting in meditation when King Yadu passed by and saw this young person sitting unaffected, happy and calm.
King Yadu approached Dattatreya and humbly asked, “ How do you remain unaffected by troubles, happy and calm? Why do you always seem to be floating in bliss (happiness)? What has made this possible?”
Dattatreya replied, “O King Yadu I have observed the world closely and obtained a little knowledge from a number of gurus (teachers). Listen carefully! I will tell you what I have learnt.”
Datta said, “O King Yadu, listen carefully to what I learnt from the Boy.”
“A little boy has no worries about wife and children. Praise or rebuke from others does not affect him. He is always happy playing by himself. I learnt from him that a yogi (an enlightened person) should be like him.
Datta learnt that there is really no great difference between a little boy and a yogi. Both are free from worry, both of them are happy. Neither of them hanker after possessions.
Whereas the boy does not make any effort because he has no knowledge, the yogi knowing everything and having attained God remains actionless (performing actions without attachment or the thought that he is performing the actions) through cognition (awareness, reasoning and understanding).
